Why I'm Taking This Class

Similar to several classmates who have already posted, I'm taking this class because I enjoy wine but know very little about it (despite several trips to Napa, Sonoma and Livermore over the past year), and even less about the underlying business.

As Jeff put it yesterday, I often find myself "faking it" when it comes to wine. My approach to ordering/buying wine is typically to pick a varietal and then select a bottle based largely on price rather than other more important factors such as region, winemaker, vintage, etc. My primary objective for this class is to build up enough knowledge that I feel confident discussing, describing, and ordering wine. Based on yesterday's session, I have no doubt that I will achieve this goal.

  1. This "faking it" idea totally resonates with me as well. I know what I like (and perhaps more so what I do not), and I know that I like wine, but that is mostly the extent of my wine knowledge.

After yesterday I'm confident we'll come out of this class in 10 weeks with a much deeper knowledge than we ever thought we'd have.
