Craftsmanship at Scale

As a former product designer, I'm fascinated by any process that demands craftsmanship. In recent years, I've totally fallen for the artisanal movement - from ceramics to coffee to watches to leather to glassblowing, I'm a total sucker for anything "handmade." As manufacturing becomes more industrialized, I have wondered how some of these small artisanal companies can survive, and how a company with a craftsman approach can scale its business while still maintaining the integrity of its products.

Wine to me is an amazing lens to this challenge: the debates around the proper way to make wine, the question of authenticity, innovation vs traditional methods, small wineries vs the E&J Gallo's, how/if winemakers will adjust to millennials' lower price points. Every winemaker faces the challenge of how to grow the business while maintaining quality, and I'm excited to use this class and this product to learn how craftsmanship is maintained as one scales.

Lastly, I've drank wine for many years without knowing a lot about it but have some of the best memories (or lack thereof) and stories from wine-filled nights: travels, weddings, celebrations, new friendships, memorable meals, all occasions marked by wine. I couldn't resist taking a class dedicated to something that produces this much joy, and I'm excited to learn more with all of you.
