My best friend is visiting from Washington, D.C. this weekend so I used her visit as an excuse to "finally" try Scribe Winery in Sonoma. I say "finally" because when I first moved to San Francisco in 2011, Scribe was all the rage among my coworkers because of its beautiful location. Scribe sits in a very "grammable" location with a hilltop lookout and a restored hacienda. Italian lights string over a patio and Mexicali blankets are strewn about. 20 something women wear booties and green utility jackets, aka the SF uniform. While popular among my city friends, they are relatively small producers, producing 13,000 cases per year with grapes from Carneros, Sonoma Coast, Sonoma, and Napa.
So did it live up to the hype? Yes I think it did. The tasting was expensive at $60 but it included 4 wines and a small meal. The small meal felt healthy and fresh in both quality and imagination. The wines offered were Nouveau Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. I liked all very much except for the Nouveau Pinot. It tasted very sweet to me and had a lot of odd sediment. I ended up purchasing the Pinot and the Cab. Overall what made Scribe live up to the hype for me was the service mentality of the staff and the beautiful scenery. The servers were not very interested in speaking to the wine production process but they were very attentive and friendly. There were also a lot of kids running around which I haven't seen as much at other wineries. It made for an incredibly enjoyable afternoon and my friend was so excited to feel Californian. We did of course take photos...see two below :)
