Wine Commercials

Super Bowl ads are known for their entertainment value, and the Yellow Tail spot was no exception. The 30 second has faced a lot of backlash, especially from the Australian audience. The "babe on a beach" and rooftop party bit might be a little tacky, but I think there's something to be said about making wine more accessible and approachable. With wine sales on the rise leading up to the Super Bowl, and as the fastest growing imported wine in the US market, Yellow Tail timed the ad perfectly.

The commercial prompted me to watch a few wine ads from the past. It appears that historically, wine brands have taken themselves a little too seriously, which has likely contributed to the elitist aura around wine consumption. I think this quote sums up the sentiment:
Watch a few wine commercials and you'll start to notice a striking similarity from one bland ad to the next, especially during the '70s and '80s. Many of these ads were for mass produced California wines that had about as much originality as a Lady Gaga song. (I'm sorry, but she's basically Madonna without a sense of humor.)
Here are a few for reference:

  1. Thanks for sharing these! It's a really interesting comparison. I find it interesting that beer companies normally get away with promoting really funny and entertaining Super Bowl ads, but wine companies seem to deal with more scrutiny.

  2. Definitely an interesting comparison. I've seen this Woodbridge "Making Moments" commercial a lot recently which seems like a nice middle ground.
