There are multiple wine apps are tackling helping people remember and record for posterity the wines they drink and their impressions of them. A number of you in class have used Vivino to look up the wines we've tasted, but I know others who are fiercely loyal to Delectable, so I thought I'd take a look at how Vivino and Delectable match up.
The two apps are fairly similar in function:
- Both use a wine bottle label photo for identification of the wine
- Invites user to rate the wines
- Social media features: allows users to follow each other and to "like" or comment
- Can post to FB and Twitter
- Allows for purchase within app
- Offers wine suggestions by occasion or by region
- Delectable has a simpler interface: fewer tabs on the home screen. It's an easier app to learn how to use but offers less information / learning. Feels designed more for a casual user or wine novice
- Vivino includes a newsfeed of sorts with articles on the latest in the wine industry, trends, region reports -> a lot more content for those who want to geek out on wine and/or are using the app as more than just record keeping
- Vivino offers a wine list scanner: you can scan a restaurant wine list, and the app pulls up ratings and info on the wines
- Vivino offers a premium version of the product with added features like personal recommendations, expert ratings and cellar management
- Vivino uses a five star system, Delectable a sliding scale of smiley faces. This may seem subtle but I think it's significant in brand, as Delectable makes the wine rating and reviewing feel more playful, while Vivino's is a little more serious
- Speed and accuracy of label identification: Vivino wins over Delectable
- Who's on which app: if you want to follow wine influencers / celebrities, winemaker Steve Matthiason, famous sommeliers, and prominent wine critics tend to be on Delectable
- Funding
- Vivino raised a $25M Series B round, led by SCP Neptune International, the investment arm of Moet Hennessy's global CEO.
- Delectable was just acquired (for an undisclosed amount) by renowned wine critic Antonio Gallani at the end of 2016
Overall, Vivino offers a more extensive set of features and content, but if you're just looking to keep record of the wines you drink and your impressions of it, Delectable does the job with its sleek design and focus on doing fewer things well.
