Wine-drinking in Japan

Inspired by some of our classmates’ presentations on wine in Japan, an article from Bloomberg this week caught my eye.  Apparently, working women in Japan are increasingly drinking more wine, which should bode well for any bet on Japanese wine makers.  A few other facts that also struck me as interesting:

  • Chile has been the prime beneficiary of this trend, overtaking France as Japan’s top wine supplier in 2015
  • Rice is still the source of a majority of Japan’s wine at 61%, but sales volumes haven’t increased since 2011 (vs. grape wine consumption increasing on average 4.5% per year over the past six years)
  • Per capita, wine consumption has increased 50% since 2006 to an average of 2.4 liters per year
