I took this course for two reasons. First, to do a deep dive into a specific industry. Second, to learn more about a very interesting subject that is great for making conversation and breaking the ice.
In business school, we are inundated with case studies. Like butterflies, we flit between businesses and industries, front-end to back-end, marketing to operations to finance. We are exposed to a wide variety of concepts and practices from a great spectrum of the best companies and organisations in order to learn. Whilst benefiting from the experience, I could not help but feel I was only taking snapshots of businesses and not really understanding how it all comes together. Therefore, I thought it was important to study a particular industry from production all the way to retail and appreciation of the product.
It was easy to narrow down to the wine industry. Over the years, I have grown to appreciate the importance of being able to make engaging small talk in both professional and personal settings. Wine is not only a good lubricant for conversation, it is often also a popular topic. In addition, while I enjoy wine, I have also been intimidated by the many varieties, intricacies and foreign names. I thought this course would be a great opportunity to learn more and fill those gaps.
