I took this class because I'm really interested in wine. I think I like it for two reasons: (1) for the taste and (2) for the lifelong learning.
It tastes great and always makes a gathering or meal so better. In addition, I really like the lifelong learning that comes with getting to know wine. I love trying wine from different regions when I travel. For example, just in the last year, I've discovered that Chardonnays from Santorini are really delicious (which is saying a lot for someone who doesn't drink white wines). It's partly because the grapes grown in Santorini are really sweet. However, the Greek reds, for example the Agiorgitiko, are really bad. And the local grape varietals from Croatia are really delicious and cheap. Previously, production was all done in a communal style. I also loved the Malbecs in Argentina when I traveled there for my GST and the Carmeneres from Chile. For me, getting to learn about local wines is a really fun part of the travel experience.
It's been really fun moving to California and visiting vineyards in Sonoma and Napa. I had always loved the bold Napa cabs, and getting to visit the vineyards and learn more about the production process has been fun. Luckily, I don't have a palette for old world wines, and can save myself from the French Bordeaux.
